Kevin van den Elzen on Instagram: "Happy birthday to the Goat, Mel Lewis. He would’ve been 96 today. Here’s Mel playing with the Shorty Rogers quintet with Joe Maini, Pete Jolly and Max Bennet. This whole tv broadcast is excellent. Mel was in LA from 1957 until about 1962 / 63. He came to LA with the Stan Kenton orchestra. Known for his melodic style of playing, he could propel any band. Especially large ensembles. He left a deep impression on other LA drummers such as Frank Capp, Nick Ceroli and Larry Bunker. He recorded in LA with Terry Gibbs, Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers, Med Flory, Quincy Jones, Stan Kenton and many others."
